I did the opposite and did the film then thought I'd read the book. The characters are so well formed that you can picture them so clearly in your mind, as well as the rural town where they reside. The book is gritty and conjures up the reality of life within the family and the hard times of life in the prohibition years. I believe it's based on facts.
