I think the biggest issue is you would need bases of the proper size(for calculating proper distance) and placeholders that match the height of the unit you are using(not a big deal but can impact line of sight. They aren't as detailed as the actual models, but the sizing and shapes should get you by until you can get the real thing. It would be awful to sink a few hundred in models (which is barely a starting army) then realize you dont really care for it. Today folks it's time to turn back the clock once more and delve into some real world history. I think most people would cut you some slack if you explain this, they might even be excited to help teach you the game and get you into the hobby.
