The !Kung people use enculturation strongly to impress their cultural value of humility; in United States culture, it is emphasized less and it shows in the much wider acceptance of arrogance. Because language is the primary means of communication, it is one of most important components of the enculturation process, and because cultural information is encoded in language, children acquire knowledge about their society through verbal interaction with adults. A common way members of the United States culture discourage displays of arrogance is simply by telling the younger generation that it is a bad quality. Later on in their development, an infant begins to discriminate between sounds, producing those that are heard most often. Though an infant is born with the ability to produce any sound and learn any language, they are shown to prefer their mother’s native tongue, which they hear prenatally.
