He's not someone to be pitied or mocked, he's actually a very kind-hearted, gentle and insightful man.

In 1975, he won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism. Years later, as a middle-aged man, Karl is deemed harmless to society and released from the mental institution where he resides. Just below that it reads "Ticket Confirmation#:" followed by a 10-digit number. I thought the writing was excellent and while all characters are really well-written, it doesn't make Karl look like a muppet. The film was based on George Hickenlooper’s acclaimed short “Some Folks Call it a Sling Blade” and brought Thornton into Hollywood’s spotlight and, perhaps, to Angelina Jolie’s attention.
He repairs everything he puts his hand to, he makes new friends, and in one superb adventure, he orders and eats french fries for the first time, and his delight, masked behind his usual gruff manner, is boundless. Its a Hollywood gimme: feature a mentally/physically challenged soul as the central character in a picture and, bingo, Oscar time. | Rating: 3.5/4 It's not hilarious, it's only a few scenes here and there, but they were a welcome surprise. He says that the character “came to him” one morning while he was shaving, and he started talking to himself in the mirror, in Karl's voice. Well acted, a multi-leveled story and a pure honesty make Sling Blade one of my favourite films of the 1990s. The comedic highlight would have to be when Doyle and his band return to the house from buying alcohol and they're discussing the band, music, lyrics, etc.
He is not too sure how some aspects of the world work, and stands in front of a door for hours before he thinks of knocking. Musicians Col. Bruce Hampton and Vic Chesnutt are among Doyle's party guests. An abundance of long, flat medium shots that rob the film of intimacy and give it a sleepy pace. First things first, I've owned this movie for years now and today was the first time watching. A masterpiece of Southern storytelling.

Don’t worry, it won’t take long. And by then we have come to know Karl with a real understanding and fondness.
That doesn't mean that the movie isn't compelling, because it's a movie that commands your attention from beginning to end. What's most impressive about this film is the fact that Billy Bob Thorton manages to look and sound like a completely different person.
