Oratorians work for the glory of God and the good of their neighbours, free to resign their membership in the Congregation without canonical impediment or ecclesiastical dispensation. Pope Benedict XVI beatified him in 2010. His writing interests include vestment design, book arts, architecture and liturgical history.

Oratorians, following the example of the Oratory's namesake Saint Martin, connect their spiritual lives to the needs of the wider world by engaging in at least one continuous corporal work of mercy in the Name of Jesus Christ, who calls us to care for the needs of the world, especially the poor, the hungry, the sick, the infirm, and those imprisoned. Another year of events has passed and these have included a quiz night, Gala Dinner, golf day and Headmaster’s XV rugby match. He studied and then taught at Oxford University, and became the Vicar of St Mary the Virgin, the University Church; he was known for his intellect, his pastoral care and his preaching. The Oratory School opened on 1st May 1859, with nine boys. Founding the first Oratorian community of priests in Birmingham in the late 1840s, he continued to write major works of theology and philosophy as a Catholic. Pope Francis canonised him on 13th October 2019.This year is an exciting time for The Oratory School as it is 160 years since the school was founded by Saint John Henry Newman in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Philip himself remained at S. Girolamo till 1583, and it was only in obedience to Gregory XIII that he then left his old home and came to live at the Vallicella. He was made a Cardinal in 1879 and he died in 1890. Today we turn our attention to what is probably the next most well known altar of the London Oratory, the Lady Altar, located just to the right of the sanctuary. The school began on 2 May 1859 with 9 boys. They now wanted him to educate their sons, giving them a liberal, classical education, which would fit them for universities and public life, but in a sound Catholic context.
