The term ‘riddim’ is the Jamaican patois spelling of rhythm.

Burning Spear's work at Studio One ,not only made some undeniable classics,but also many classic riddims that are used in roots and dancehall.His amazing He Prayed tune from 1971 at the studio created this classic riddim taht is been used a lot since then,and especially in the 90s. This overused riddim ,was originally a ska track from Bab Brooks, produced by Vincent 'King' Edwards in 1964.

Another Studio One riddim,the Heptones used it first in the eponymous song at 1968.Later Winston Jarrett cut a track in Studio One named Up Park No Mans Land,that was refering known as Up ParkCamp that is also a another name used for the riddim. Derrick Harriott cut a tune named Solomon at about 1967 (although i suspect maybe 1968),and this is the original tune of the riddim.Many many versions since then,especially from the early 80s and late 90s! Mittoo with  the Sound Dimension instumental from 1968, the riddim was used a bit from Coxsone ,but Jospeh Hookim found this riddim again at 1976 and used it for Channel One at 1976. Th first cuts of the original song ,had the Royals named as The Tempests. A rocksteady tune named Baba Boom from the Jamaicans on Treasure Isle ,prodcued by Duke Reid was the first tarck on this riddim.Mittoo cut an instrumental of the track later.Riddim was used again in the early 80s,but mostly in the early 90s and 00s. The digital revolution!This riddim ,alone, started the digital dancehall era.Created at Jammys studios from Wayne Smith and Noel Davey,an engineer, in a Casio MT-40 like the one in  the image. The riddim was mostly voiced in the 80s,but is used till today. Original from The Uniques,cicra 1968-69, produced by Lloyd Daley.Later U-Roy made a popular verion named Scandal,but it was Loneranger's HUGE hit M16 that baptised this heavy riddim! The riddim is influenced from "Norwigian Wood" from the Beatles.The riddim was used several times by all the major reggae producers,and and a particular success at the mid 80s and 00s.

Riddim probably orginates from a Gregory Isaacs tune from 1977.In the 80s the riddim was used a lot and Pinchers scored many hits with it ,with many versions ,most famous is "Hold Me" on Jammys. This riddim originates from the Skengdon  label,first track is by Super Cat titled,what else,Mud Up. Massive riddim,used a lot at the dancehall decade (the 80s),Bunny Lee foudn it and sued it in a Dillinger track,and , later rediscoverd at the rub-a-dub era and producers like Junjo Lawes and George Phang.
