So, I usually don't qualify my reviews, but this movie is sort of special, and the comments I've read are from all over the map so I feel I should give some idea of where I'm coming from too. The critics must be crazy.

510 of 687 people found this review helpful. I couldn't speak for 20 minutes after walking out of the theater, except to say "Oh my gosh!!!" To my theory!

The sets were absolutely beautiful.

HOWEVER, if you are willing to watch this film with an open mind you will see that it is still the same story with the same wonderful music with only a few modifications. Was this review helpful?

Gerard portrays all of the Phantom's qualities: anger, sadness, loneliness, genius, madness and the list goes on, better than one would hope.

It is, truly, the best movie I have ever seen. The managers, I’m sorry to say, were quite interchangeable as characters (they’re not in the stage play, at least not always), Carlotta was brilliantly over the top, and Piangi struggled to get on his elephant at the beginning, which is really all I ever ask of Piangi.You wouldn’t have to change the costumes to turn a play into a movie.

His singing doesn’t even compare to the brilliance performed by other Phantoms, but it was pretty good. The movie also adds an element not in the play, by intercutting random shots of Raoul, 50 years later, taking the Phantom’s music box to Christine’s grave. Thanks to a Barbra Streisand cd, that Patrick more than likely gave me, I knew two of the songs. When the phantom begins to kill and cause damage to the opera house, the dancer's heroic suitor sets out to stop the phantom once and for all. PC

This of course is the musical adaptation if you may have not realized by now. Movies The plot is the same as the play, the music is (basically) the same as the play, so I’m not going to get into that here.

It does actually make me like the movie a bit better…So at the end of the day, I actually enjoyed watching this very much because I’m always fascinated by how someone interprets the Phantom (the character and the story), whether I like how they did it or not. I remember loving it, but it has been a while! Not to say that it was a bad adaptation: Gerard Butler sure did a fantastic job as the titular character. I did not really know who Gerard and Emmy were but found the pair totally enchanting; singing was meaningful and sensual. Was this review helpful?

In my opinion this was a smart move as it wouldn't make sense to have the climax of the story occur in the middle of the film. Notice how many of the musical themes belonging to Christine and the Phantom feature the violin. The roof scene (All I Ask of You) was filled with tension you never really see in the stage version. Was this review helpful? I had never seen the stage production, and wasn't familiar with the plot or anything.

Although I have never seen it on-stage, the film version - for me - was so enchanting that I now cannot wait to obtain tickets to it. While I think the Phantom shooting fireballs in the movie would have been laughable, it is slightly annoying that here Raoul has the chance to defeat the Phantom but doesn't - only to immediately sing about a plan to capture the Phantom. The story, of course, is about a masked man who lives under an opera house and falls in love with Christine Daae, the beautiful soprano, who is also pursued by Raoul, the Vicomte de Chagney. The theatre set itself was absolutely stunning; marble and velvet being the main materials within it. In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking parole, agrees to care for a factory worker's daughter. I was afraid that Schumacher would put impossible effects, such as the Mirror if it hadn't been shown to slide open, into the movie for effects purposed, but it was made clear that he did not.
